Ron Harper owns one of the rarest arcs in basketball: the franchise scorer who traded his numbers for rings and never looked back. Before he was the steady hand starting next to Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen, he was a high-flying 20-point-a-night guard whose dunks drew comparisons to the game's most electric athletes.
Out of Dayton, Ohio, Harper became the greatest player in Miami University history - the RedHawks' all-time leading scorer and rebounder, a back-to-back MAC Player of the Year, and the first player in his conference to top 2,000 points and 1,000 rebounds. Cleveland took him eighth overall in the 1986 NBA Draft, and he hit the league at a sprint, earning All-Rookie First Team honors and lighting up scoreboards for the Cavaliers and later the Los Angeles Clippers.
Then came the injury that rewrites most careers - and the reinvention that defined his. Harper rebuilt his game in Chicago as a long, disruptive defensive guard, starting on the 72-10 1995-96 Bulls and anchoring the backcourt through the second three-peat. Phil Jackson brought him to Los Angeles, where Harper's poise helped a young Lakers core close out two more titles, giving him five championships in his final six seasons.
Today Harper brings that story - talent, setback, sacrifice, and five rings - to stages, broadcasts, and communities across the country. A Miami University Hall of Famer with an honorary doctorate from his alma mater, he remains one of the game's most engaging storytellers, and he is watching the family name carry on as his son, Ron Harper Jr., builds his own NBA career.
